Certification & Re-certification

Initial Certification

Pennsylvania Certification Board Requirements for Community Health Worker Certification:

  1. Education/Training: 75 total hours of education from a PCB accredited CHW training provider gained within the last five years. 

  2. Work Experience: One year of full-time volunteer or paid employment -- or -- 2000 hours of part-time of volunteer or paid employment as a Community Health Worker or job title with similar responsibilities. 

  3. Current Volunteer/Job Description: Copy of current Community Health Worker volunteer/job description, obtained from current organization, and which must be signed by both the applicant and their immediate supervisor. 

  4. One-The-Job Supervision: 60 hours of on-the-job supervision of qualifying work experience specific to the domains.

Certified Community Health Workers (CCHW) are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education relevant to community health, including 3 hours in ethics every two years. The recertification schedule is every two years from your initial certification date or most recent recertification date.

The fee for recertification is $75.
